First Downtown Bike Lanes Coming to 10th & Texas

The Downtown Fort Worth bike plan has been assembled and hashed out (many thanks to the folks who, along with us, participated in the planning efforts, including City of Fort Worth staff, Kimley-Horn and Associates, and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc.). You’ll be seeing the fruits of the downtown bike plan starting to appear over the coming months, including large increases in bike parking, a bevy of bike lanes and shared lane routes, and even a bike lane connection with the Near Southside. First up on the street infrastructure plan are downtown’s first bike lanes, coming to 10th & Texas.

10th & Texas will be reconfigured into a bike lane couplet, with 10th running west and Texas running east. The installation will stretch from Throckmorton on the east all the way to Forest Park on the west. (Incidentally, that’s just across the street from the new eastern bank Trinity Trails extension and the under-construction Phyllis Tilley Memorial Bridge – seems like an ideal location for a bike crossing of Forest Park, maybe even with a bike signal. We’d like to approach the city and Streams & Valleys about looking into it.)

The routes will be almost all dedicated bike lanes, apart from a couple of brief interludes using sharrows instead due to road widths and such. In addition, extensive signage will be installed letting bikes know how to get around. There’s even going to be wayfinding signage, directing users toward the downtown core and the Trinity Trails.

There are quite a few more bike lane & sharrow installs coming to downtown, but 10th & Texas will give a good taste of what to expect. The design is finished and approved, and installation is expected to be complete this summer. We’ve got the schematics of the new bike lanes below – click on an image to embiggen:
