Who would you think gave this quote about the modern streetcar project?
This is a no-brainer. This is the future of our mobility and air quality. You might be surprised to know that quote comes from District 6 councilman Jungus Jordan, who has emerged as a pretty devout opponent of the streetcar project. The quote above is from the December 16, 2008 Pre-Council meeting, and comes after a briefing from Dana Burghdoff on the then-early streetcar study. (Jordan’s segment starts at roughly 1:08:51 in the video.)
The man who these days votes against the streetcar, questions using TIFs to fund it, seemed to lead the push to give back the federal grant, and says it isn’t culturally compatible with Fort Worth said previously that the streetcar was a “no-brainer” and “the future of our mobility and air quality.” Further, December 2008 Jungus said the following:
The word I would like to hear frequently when we’re talking about mobility is “seamless.” It is important to understand that it’s not commuter rail OR streetcars, and it’s not roads OR streetcars. The solution has got to be an integrated, seamless means of mobility.Later on in the same segment, he adds:
This is one of those issues where we have to make sure that our message is correct and that we’re talking all things, that this is not competing against commuter rail, it’s part of the system. It’s complimentary.Still later, while talking about working with leaders in Austin:
…certainly we should look at all sources of funding, whether they be TIF or federal money…It’s interesting how two years can so radically shift one councilman’s viewpoint on the streetcar project.
