Streetfilms: Cycle Chic in Copenhagen and Beyond
By: Kevin Buchanan
Elizabeth Press, from Streetfilms:
You can trace the term “cycle chic” back to 2006, when Mikael Colville-Andersen launched his Copenhagen Cycle Chic blog. It means different things to different people, but basically, “cycle chic” is about riding in everyday clothes instead of specialized gear like spandex or cycling shoes.
When I was in Copenhagen last December I had the chance to meet up with Colville-Andersen. After touring the city’s first-rate bike infrastructure, I asked him about cycle chic. He said the number of collaborators and followers around the world is constantly growing, making cycle chic a movement-within-a-movement. So for this video, I crowdsourced video from a few other cycle chic bloggers to see what’s so hot about using fashion and style to promote bicycling. Enjoy!

I like the video…thanks for posting this. It kinda bothers me a little that bicycles have become this fashion statement. I am concerned that people don’t actually learn the rules and proper bicycle safety when being on a bike for mere fashion sense. I do appreciate the notion of it, and if it gets more people riding bicycles then I am all for it. But maybe we should somehow incorporate safety as fashion as well? Maybe some fashion helmet designs? who knows but nobody likes to wear helmets and I am actually someone who refuses to ride without one. I like my cranium and want to be able to use it later in life
Our personal view is that we should be working to design streets as safe for pedestrians and cyclists as their European counterparts enjoy – then, helmets won’t be essential.
YES!! Thank you….I do agree on that. I look forward to that kind of infrastructure but until then I wear my helmet (especially crossing 8th street). I didn’t realize that until you reminded me and one day hopefully we will have that type of infrastructure here in Fort Worth. I will always support a bicycle friendly city.
