Of Peasants And Kings: The Architecture Of Legorreta + Legorreta
By: Kevin Buchanan
Running through December 7th at the AIA Fort Worth Center for Architecture is an exhibit on the works of Legorreta + Legorreta, the Mexican firm behind the new Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. The AIA Fort Worth Center for Architecture is located at 3425 W. Seventh St. in the Cultural District. Here’s the release from AIA Fort Worth about the exhibit – should be very interesting for Fort Worthology readers. (Note that the AIA Fort Worth Center for Architecture is not currently open on Fridays or weekends). We’re a little behind on this one, but the AIA plans to have a lot of architecture exhibits at the facility, so look for more to come.
The Center for Architecture in association with AIAFW is pleased to present the work of AIA Gold Medal Winner Legorreta + Legorreta.
The exhibit explores selected works which highlight the forces that have influenced the firm for the past 46 years.
“At Legorreta + Legorreta we design for the people who use the buildings, therefore, we look for an architecture that makes people happy and not an architecture only for architects to admire. We believe that a good building is the one which responds not only to the needs of the users, to the city, to the environment, to a schedule and budget, but also to the artistic and spiritual needs of the people. As a Mexican firm, Legorreta + Legorreta has been exposed and influenced by Mexican Vernacular architecture. The use of color, light, water and mystery is more of an emotional response to our architecture than an intellectual one. We have also learned the important role that human values play in architecture and seek to create architecture of optimism that will serve society and contribute to build better cities.”
LegorretaArquitectos was founded more than 40 years ago by Ricardo Legorreta, Noe Castro and Carlos Vargas senior. At the beginning of the 90′s Victor Legorreta, son of Ricardo, joined the firm leading a group of young architects. In 2000 the firm name changed to Legorreta + Legorreta which represents more than a name, it represents the current organization.
