Portland Addendum: Business Loves Bike Parking
By: Kevin Buchanan
Thanks to our friends at BikePortland.org, here’s this fun story of the owner of Por Que No, a tacqueria with locations on Mississippi in North Portland and Hawthorne in Southeast Portland. Owner Bryan Steelman was so excited to get an on-street bike corral at his first location that he made one himself until the city installed a formal one. The bike corral was so good for business – allowing more vehicles to park, removing cars blocking views from his outdoor seating area, removing exhaust from said area, etc. – that he lobbied for, and got, one at the Hawthorne location. So happy is Steelman with the bike parking, he’s offering up a deal for bike riders:
Steelman is ecstatic about the new parking. “It’s so great for bicyclists, pedestrians, businesses, neighborhoods, communities…the list goes on…so much good for such little cost!” he writes.
To celebrate, Steelman says he’ll offer Happy Hour prices any time of the day to anyone who bikes to either of his Por Que No locations today through Sunday (that’s $1 off chips/guac and chips/salsa, $.50 off each taco, $1.50 off margaritas, and $.50 off all beers & micheladas & aguas frescas).
Obviously, Fort Worth’s a ways off from Portland in this regard, but remember – the Bike Fort Worth plan does include these on-street corrals. We think we can look forward to more businesses jumping on the bandwagon as the amount of cycling increases – already, Spiral Diner on Magnolia has had to install their own bike racks due to heavy bike traffic overwhelming the two city-installed “lollipop” racks on the sidewalk.
