Arts Goggle This Friday

It’s time for another Arts Goggle in the Near Southside. This Friday, the 27th, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, come to the Near Southside for a huge, free art & music festival fairly unlike anything else in the city. This time around, there are no less than fifty-four venues for you to check out, attracting an even greater number of artists. Paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, street performers, and live music will be on display. Featuring art and music on all of the Near Southside’s major streets: Magnolia Avenue, Park Place, Pennsylvania Avenue, South Main Street, Oleander Walk, and more.

In addition to walking, there will be pedicabs and a new trolley shuttle to get you to all the venues of the event. Naturally, since this is in the Near Southside, you won’t have to leave the event to eat or grab a drink, as some of Fort Worth’s best places are in the Near Southside, like Spiral Diner, Chadra Mezza & Grill, Yucatan Taco Stand, the Chat Room Pub, the Fairmount, Finn MacCool’s, Junsuree Thai, King Tut, Lili’s Bistro, Gallery Art Cafe, Old Neighborhood Grill, and more – all local and indie.

Live music includes:

Blue Beats – 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM – 1612 Park Place

Fort Worth National Band – 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM – TMA|CHL Architecture, 814 Pennsylvania

Responsible and thoughtful comments are welcome. Be aware, though, that this site exists in part as an advocacy site for New Urbanism and its potential to remake Fort Worth into an even more livable city than it is today. Thoughtful dissent is generally welcome insofar as it fosters thoughtful replies. Inflammatory dissent, whether intentional or not, will be deleted. Commenters whose comments we routinely delete will be banned. Nothing personal, but this is a privately owned and operated web site, and we are aiming for a specific tone and audience. Work within those guidelines and all will be well.

Actually this event was kind of modeled after the FWADA Gallery Night and piggybacked onto the FWADA weekend. Also similar to DADA walk. The only real difference is that it is businesses and not galleries, though many businesses open their doors for FWADA Gallery Night to show work.

Don’t forget about Benito’s, one of the oldest restaurants on Magnolia, and one of the tastiest. Definitely shouldn’t be left off the list.

  2. Benito’s is, of course, awesome. Wasn’t going for a comprehensive list. :)

The biggest difference, to me, is that Arts Goggle is so much more compact and has more of a festive urban neighborhood sort of feel to it as a result. Everything is within an easy bike ride or trolley ride from everything else, and in fact the majority can be seen by nothing more than walking. Gallery Night’s flyer lists venues all over the area – the Cultural District, University/Berry, the Mercado/Stockyards area, even in *Arlington.* That alone gives the thing a very different feel.

Gallery Night is great – don’t get me wrong. I hope everybody takes advantage of it on Saturday night as well. I do think that Arts Goggle has evolved into its own, very unique thing and that it’s more different from Gallery Night than you’re giving it credit for. Arts Goggle is as much about the neighborhood and the district as it is about the art and music.
