I had to step in on the "choice riders" discussion. Clearly somehow lost in translation is the concept that they are riding by choice, not by compulsion. Not that these riders are "better" than others. I think the point is, without attracting "choice" riders there's no net reduction in auto traffic.

I want to tell anyone who hasn't ridden a streetcar that there's a BIG difference between riding a streetcar and a bus. Streetcars are silent and sophisticated, they sail along the rails like a ship at sea. Busses, by contrast, bounce and jar, smell bad, feel insecure as they weave along the road -- there's no comparison. And I firmly believe, after living in Toronto, Canada, where people have a choice of subway, steetcar, or bus, that there is a huge difference in ridership depending on quality of transit. In Toronto, neighborhoods are valued in three tiers -- subway, streetcar, bus access.

Go Streetcars!

As I was riding the bus yesterday, I started thinking about this hot topic once again.

Even though I know what "choice riders" means (after clarification in a previous thread), it still sounds like a term brimming with elitism.

Perhaps we could be called "option riders" instead.

What indicates that this will have no value for actual transportation? Sure, the Cultural District line hits a lot of tourist destinations, but there are several office developments going on out there as well. And downtown and the Near Southside are the two biggest employment centers in the city, and the route has been specifically designed to hit all the major employers in the Near Southside.

The system can't please everybody, but the planned routes are hardly about just moving "yuppies and tourists." The network will also be extended down East Rosedale - there's hardly any aspect of "yuppies or tourists" there.

These routes, as they are, are already really useful.

"Choice riders" is just a term for those who don't have to use transit, but choose to anyway. Attracting them is very important - not just serving the transit dependent. We have to see this as a system to serve anybody, not just those who have to use it.

(And the existence of the streetcar doesn't negate The T's bus routes.)

(And incidentally, dismissing people who are moving back into the central city in new developments as "yuppies" is, honestly, getting a little worn out. There's a lot more to the renewal of urban Fort Worth than just "yuppies.")

I'm all for a good streetcar system and good public transportation in general and see that it would probably help the city, but your remark about "choice riders" perfectly captures my concern.
The system looks like it would be fantastic at moving yuppies and tourists from loft to museum to bar to Sundance Square, but what about people that don't have ANY means of transportation, live where they can afford to and need to get to jobs? Hip and fun is well and good (uh, sometimes,) but really useful might should be considered at the same time for really broad support.
Just sayin'.

The negative remark is not surprising. Fort Worth always seems to draw out the negative thought when it comes to progression. I am not to sure if you ever could satisfy this one person. Yhank goodness we don't. Good summary of both meetings.

I concur with Mr. Struhs, build it all at once! That way, I can go on a bender all over town like I've done in Madrid and Praha w/o the worry of The Man and the drive home.

Viva Plaza Major!

I'm pro-Tube, myself... but until that time, I suppose I'd be satisfied with just a streetcar system ;)

Seriously, I wish I could have attended the Cultural District meeting. Thanks for the detailed report, Kevin!
