This film from Streetfilms features Greg Raisman of the Portland Office of Transportation giving a tour of bicycle parking facilities in Portland, Oregon. Watch the video and learn the pros and cons of on street bicycle parking (a bicycle corral) vs a sheltered bicycle parking oasis. Fort Worthology is about Fort Worth, but I do like to use examples from other cities of great urbanity, so that’s why I draw on photos and videos from places like Portland.
Would love to hear from Fort Worth urban cyclists about bike parking here in Fort Worth - what’s good, what needs improvement, ideas and opportunities for improvement. I myself am a bike commuter here in the Near Southside (I ride a black Breezer), so I plan on increasing the urban cycling coverage here at Fort Worthology in general.
Expect more Streetfilms to appear on Fort Worthology in the future - they can often showcase fascinating developments in urban design.
In addition, from this post forward Fort Worthology now has a “Bicycling” category, under Transit & Infrastructure, to help you find future bicycling-related posts more easily.

Very cool! I hope Fort Worth integrates some of these concepts. I’d be interested in a study on what these designs have done to both bike vandalism and bike theft.
I’m looking forward to having more spots to park my Breezer Uptown 8.
Huzzah!
Jeffrey,
What a coincidence - I also have an Uptown 8. Great bike. I love mine.
I don’t ride a bicycle into town, but I do ride a motorcycle. I have to pay the same parking fees as a car, but 4-5 bikes could fit into a car spot. I think it would be good for the city to promote motorcycles / scooters as a less-polluting commuting option by providing free or lesser-cost parking options.
I think something like this would be great. As it is now I try to use my bicycle as my primary mode of transportation, including to and from work. I live in Arlington Heights and more bike lanes and bike parking would be great. Right now I usually have to use road signs or handicaped parking signs for locking my bike.
I probably shouldn’t like the bike corrals over the sidewalk extension, but I really do. Cheap, easy, mobile. Lots of advantages.
it looks like fort worth will never be as urban as portland unless we can put up the boundary around our city like they did. fort worth has too much sprawl and too little “urbanism”
