West 7th Update
By: Kevin Buchanan
The West 7th development is beginning to rise on more of its blocks. The first structure to go up, the parking garage seen in the photo above, has topped out, and now concrete columns are rising around it for what will be an apartment building with ground-level retail. On the next block to the east, one of the development’s bigger office buildings is nearly topped out on the 7th floor, and the next structures on that lot (another garage and the Movie Tavern/Lucky Strike Lanes complex) are about to start rising. On the more southerly blocks, another apartment/retail building is up to the first floor, and another garage has begun to rise.
Developer Cypress Equities says the development will be fully completed by the fall of 2009.

What’s up with Cypress Equities selling off some of the land on W. 7th it was going to develop? “For Sale” signs have gone up on the corner of W. 7th & University (old Taylor Rental/park site) and across the street.
Kelly,
Actually, Cypress never owned that corner at 7th & University. If you’ll notice in all the overview renderings of West 7th, that corner was not developed.
Whoever owns it now is the one trying to sell it.
I thought that corner had sold and was going to be a hotel. Guess that didn’t work out?
Connie,
As far as I know, the corner hasn’t been planned as anything for a while. Ever since the gas station was demolished, it’s just been grass. I haven’t heard anything about any planned developments on it. There are hotels going in both Museum Place and West 7th, though not by that corner – there’s an Aloft going in Museum Place at 7th & Arch Adams, and an unnamed hotel (some rumors of an Element) going in West 7th at Currie & Crockett.
My bad– I swear I heard, quite some time ago, that the Basses were considering a hotel where Taylor Rentals was. However, I haven’t heard that rumor in quite some time.
