Shelton Building sold

The historic Shelton Building at 901 Houston Street (home of the downtown Kinko’s) has been purchased by the owners of the historic Sinclair Building at 5th & Main. The building was built in 1900, but its current look is that of a 1937 Moderne remodel job. In an interesting bit of Fort Worth history, the Shelton Building formerly housed Hogan Office Supplies, owned by the brother of famed golfer Ben Hogan. In fact, if you look carefully at the building you can still see signs of Hogan’s business – on the 8th Street side, there’s a small awning with cool vintage signwriting advertising “Hogan Office Supplies,” and a similarly styled sign can still be seen near the building’s top on the rear. Other tenants of the building over the years were the Kress five & dime store (before moving to their new Kress Building on Main, now the home of the Fox & Hound Pub and the Kress Lofts apartments) and McCrory’s Variety Store.

The building’s most recent owners never fully utilized the structure – Kinko’s occupies the ground floor, but the basement and the upper floors were never remade and occupied. The building’s new owners are looking at various plans to fully use the building, and are in the process of deciding between office space and condo development of the upper floors. It’s great to see this beautiful old building getting some new attention, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on whatever plans materialize.
